Shopping for a new TV, you'll see “Mini-LED” on a lot of premium sets. So what is it, and is it worth paying for? Here's a plain-English explainer.
The quick version
Mini-LED uses thousands of tiny LEDs to light the screen, grouped into many “local dimming” zones. More, smaller lights mean the TV can be very bright while keeping dark areas dark — better contrast, and less of the grey “halo” around bright objects.
Mini-LED vs OLED
- Mini-LED (often Neo QLED): extremely bright — brilliant in sunny rooms — with rich colour and no burn-in worries.
- OLED: each pixel makes its own light, for perfect blacks and the best contrast in a darker room.
Neither is simply “better” — Mini-LED wins on brightness, OLED on absolute black levels.
Should you pay for it?
