Description

Samsung 85" R85H Micro RGB 4K Ultra HD HDR Smart TV (2026), Micro RGB Precision Color 100 - Samsung claims 100% BT.2020 coverage, evaluated to VDE certification criteria · product code MRE85R85HAUXXU

The Samsung R85H is a Micro RGB television. The panel is LCD and the change is in the backlight: instead of blue LEDs with a conversion layer, thousands of individually controlled red, green and blue LEDs mix colour behind the screen. Samsung states these LEDs measure under 100 micrometres and claims Micro RGB Precision Color 100, or full BT.2020 coverage, evaluated based on VDE certification criteria. It is not self-emissive, so black depends on the Ultimate Micro Dimming local dimming rather than on pixels switching off.

Gaming runs at 100 Hz native with variable refresh up to 144 Hz on all four HDMI ports, plus FreeSync Premium Pro, ALLM and Samsung Gaming Hub. HDR is Micro RGB HDR+ with HDR10+ Adaptive, Gaming and Advanced, and there is no Dolby Vision. Tizen adds Vision AI Companion, Art Store and Generative Wallpaper, with security updates promised until 31 December 2031.

85" R85H Micro RGB 4K Ultra HD HDR Smart TV

Micro RGB is a backlight technology, not a new kind of panel. The screen itself is LCD; what changes is what sits behind it. Rather than blue LEDs with a colour conversion layer, as Mini LED uses, thousands of individually controlled red, green and blue LEDs mix colour at the backlight itself. Samsung states those LEDs measure under 100 micrometres.

What Samsung claims from it is Micro RGB Precision Color 100: full BT.2020 coverage, evaluated against VDE certification criteria. Ultimate Micro Dimming handles contrast, and because the light still comes from behind the panel rather than from the pixels, black depends on how finely those dimming zones are driven. The Micro RGB AI Engine takes care of upscaling and picture processing.

Judge this one on colour rather than on black level: the backlight is the story here, and it is a genuinely different way of making light.

Ideal For

Viewers who care about colour

Samsung's Precision Color 100 claim covers the whole BT.2020 space, evaluated to VDE criteria, which points at deeper reds and greens than most LCD televisions manage.

Big-screen film and sport

The line runs up to 100 inches, with Ultimate Micro Dimming controlling the backlight and a wide viewing angle layer holding colour for anyone sitting off to the side.

Gaming at up to 144 Hz

All four HDMI ports take 4K at 144 Hz with variable refresh and FreeSync Premium Pro, and a 240 Hz dual line gaming mode is there at lower resolution.

What Micro RGB actually changes

The panel in front is a conventional LCD, so this is not a self-emissive set and it is not micro-LED. The change is in the light source. A Mini LED backlight uses blue LEDs and a layer that converts some of that blue into other colours; Micro RGB instead uses discrete red, green and blue LEDs, which Samsung says measure under 100 micrometres, and mixes the colour of the light before it reaches the panel. Contrast still comes from local dimming zones rather than from pixels switching off.

Colour, and what Samsung claims

Because the backlight already produces red, green and blue rather than filtering white, Samsung claims Micro RGB Precision Color 100, meaning 100 per cent of the BT.2020 colour space, evaluated based on VDE certification criteria. That is Samsung's own claim rather than an independent measurement, and it matters most on wide-gamut HDR material. HDR support is Micro RGB HDR+ with HDR10+ Adaptive, Gaming and Advanced plus HLG; there is no Dolby Vision.

Gaming, sound and connections

The panel is 100 Hz native and takes variable refresh up to 144 Hz on all four HDMI ports, with a 240 Hz dual line gaming mode at reduced resolution. FreeSync Premium Pro, ALLM, Game Bar and the Gaming Hub are all present, though G-SYNC Compatible support is not listed for this line. Audio is Dolby Atmos with Object Tracking Sound Lite and Q-Symphony, and connections run to four HDMI with eARC and two USB-A.

The Verdict

Why it stands out

  • Red, green and blue LEDs mix colour at the backlight
  • Samsung claims full BT.2020 colour coverage
  • 144 Hz variable refresh on all four HDMI ports
  • Available in sizes right up to 100 inches
  • Tizen apps with updates promised until 2031

Worth knowing

  • This is an LCD television with a new kind of backlight, not a self-emissive panel. Black level comes from local dimming zones rather than from pixels switching off.
  • There is no Glare Free anti-reflection layer on this line, which is the step-up R95H's differentiator, so expect visible reflections on a wall opposite a window.
  • Audio is a modest 30 W 2ch system on most sizes, the tuner is single rather than twin, and Zigbee or Thread needs a dongle instead of being built in.
