Every cycle
- Clean the lint filter: remove the fluff after every load. A clogged filter makes the dryer work harder, take longer and cost more — and lint is a fire hazard.
- Empty the water tank (on condenser and heat pump dryers) so it doesn't stop mid-cycle.
Every month
- Clean the condenser / heat pump filter: rinse the secondary fluff filter or condenser unit per your manual — a blocked one is the most common cause of poor drying.
- Wipe the drum and door seal to remove residue.
- Check the sensor bars (auto-sensing models) and wipe off any film so they read moisture accurately.
For vented dryers
- Check the vent hose is clear and not kinked, and that the outside vent isn't blocked — restricted airflow wastes energy and is a safety risk.
Safety first
Never run a dryer overnight or when you're out, keep the area around it clear, and don't dry items with foam, rubber or flammable residues. Regular filter cleaning is the single most important safety step.
