In short

Condensation forms when moist air from cooking, showers and wet laundry meets cold windows and walls. A dehumidifier takes that moisture out: up to 12 or 16 litres a day on the De'Longhi AriaDry Multi, and 20 on the Dimplex EverDri. Aim for around 45 to 55% humidity, and dry clothes in a heat pump dryer rather than on radiators.

Dehumidifiers

De'Longhi AriaDry Multi and Dimplex EverDri dehumidifiers, with a hygrostat to hold the humidity you set.

Compare filters and how easily it moves. The AriaDry Multi models have 3-action filtration (dust, anti-allergen and active carbon), the EverDri a pre-filter and an active carbon filter. The 16L and the EverDri roll on castors; the 12L has an integrated handle.

Humidity sensors

The Tapo T310 and T315 report temperature and humidity, and a Tapo hub links them to the app.

The T310 runs on a coin battery and the T315 on two AAA batteries; both read temperature to ±0.3°C. The H100 hub links up to 64 Tapo devices and doubles as a chime; the H200 joins 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and runs from a 9V adapter.

Heat pump dryers

Heat pump dryers need no outside vent: the water from the clothes collects in a tank or drains away.

Compare drum size and drying time. The Samsung Series 5 and the Hoover H-Dry 300 hold 9 kg and the Electrolux DelicateCare 8 kg. On its Super Speed cycle, the black Samsung Series 5 dries 5 kg in 81 minutes.

Dimplex oil-free radiators warm up without waiting for oil to heat.

Match the output to the room. The Dimplex Eco Chico Mini gives 700 W for small rooms or occasional heat, the ECR15 1.5 kW over three heat settings, and the ECR20TIE 2 kW with a programmable 24-hour timer.

How to choose a dehumidifier and cut condensation

From the product descriptions and our guides.

Measure the humidity first

Condensation on the glass shows the air is damp, but not how damp or when. Cooking, showers and drying clothes all add moisture, so the reading changes through the day. A Tapo T310 reports temperature and humidity to the Tapo app every two seconds; the T315 shows the same reading on a 2.7-inch e-ink screen, so it is on the wall as well as in the app. Put one in the problem room for a few days before you choose a dehumidifier.

Do you need a dehumidifier?

Let a humidistat do the work

A humidistat holds the humidity you set and switches the dehumidifier off automatically, our guides explain, so it is not running when the air is already dry enough. The De'Longhi AriaDry Multi models call it a hygrostat; the Dimplex EverDri has an electronic humidistat, a timer and delayed start. The AriaDry Multi models use a 285 W compressor, and our guide says compressor models are the most efficient at normal room temperatures and the right choice for most homes.

Dry laundry without adding to the damp

Wet clothes release their water into the room, where it settles on cold windows and walls, so our laundry guide advises against draping washing on radiators. Spin the load well first, and open a window or run an extractor. A dehumidifier near the airer pulls that moisture out: the De'Longhi AriaDry Multi 12L has a laundry-dry mode and the Dimplex EverDri a separate laundry mode. A heat pump dryer collects most of the water in its tank or drain hose instead.

Good to know

What size dehumidifier do I need?

Our guides suggest 10 to 12 litres a day for most homes and flats, and 16 to 20 litres for larger or damper houses or serious condensation. The De'Longhi AriaDry Multi 12L fits the first; the AriaDry Multi 16L and the Dimplex EverDri 20L fit the second.

What humidity should a home have?

Around 45 to 55%, according to our dehumidifier guide. Condensation on windows first thing in the morning, black mould in corners and a musty smell in wardrobes are signs it is higher. The Dimplex EverDri has a comfort light that shows when the air is too dry, too moist or just right.

How loud is a dehumidifier at night?

The De'Longhi AriaDry Multi 16L runs at around 40 dB. The AriaDry Multi 12L lists quiet running and the Dimplex EverDri has quiet fan speeds, but neither gives a figure. Our guide suggests checking the noise level if it will run in a bedroom or living room.

Do I have to empty a dehumidifier's tank?

Not if you connect a hose. The De'Longhi AriaDry Multi models have a 2.1-litre tank that switches the machine off when full, and the Dimplex EverDri a 3-litre tank with a visible water level. Each also has a continuous-drain option, and with a drain hose, our guide notes, you never empty it.

Does a dehumidifier make a room feel warmer?

It can help. Our dehumidifier guide says dry air feels warmer and heats faster than damp air, and our condensation guide says a dehumidifier sized to your home helps rooms feel warmer. It does not heat the room itself, though: for a small room, the Dimplex Eco Chico Mini gives 700 W of oil-free heat.
