In short
In a power cut, a portable power station runs lamps, the Wi-Fi router and chargers from its battery, a power bank keeps phones and laptops going, and a battery radio brings the news. Power stations from Jackery, Energizer, EcoFlow and DJI hold 128Wh to 1102.5Wh, and the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro switches over in under 30 ms.
Portable batteries for lights, phones, laptops and small appliances, from 128Wh to 1102.5Wh.
Compare capacity, then output and battery life. The RIVER 2 Pro gives 800 W from its AC sockets, the Energizer 1102.5Wh up to 1,200 W. The RIVER 2 Pro keeps 80% of its capacity after 3,000 cycles; both Energizers recharge up to 2,000 times.

From the product descriptions and our guides.
List what has to run and for how long. Our home backup guide puts five LED bulbs at about 25 W, and says a 1000Wh station keeps lights, Wi-Fi, a laptop and phone charging going for several hours. The DJI Power 1000 Mini (1008Wh) and the Energizer 1102.5Wh are that size. The Jackery Explorer 100 Plus (128Wh) is for phones, tablets and portable lights; the Energizer 230Wh adds a 150 W AC socket for small appliances.
The EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro has an EPS auto-switch: a light or a fish tank plugged into it keeps running when the mains drops, through an overnight outage. The DJI, Energizer and Jackery descriptions give no switch-over time. The RIVER 2 Pro also recharges from 0 to 100% in about 70 minutes on AC, so it can be topped up quickly after a storm warning, and its app shows the charge level on your phone.
A power station runs as long as its charge lasts. The RIVER 2 Pro charges four ways (AC, car, solar and USB-C) and takes up to 220 W of solar. Both Energizer stations can recharge from a separate solar panel, and the Jackery Explorer 100 Plus pairs with a SolarSaga panel. Our solar guide's rule: a panel smaller than the station's maximum solar input still works, it just charges more slowly, while a bigger one adds nothing.
For a short outage, a power bank may be enough. The Anker Power Bank 20K gives up to 4.5 full charges of an iPhone 14, and the Energizer 20,000mAh wireless bank charges a Qi phone without a cable. A radio keeps local news coming when the broadband is down: the Philips TAR2509 and the Majority Histon both run from batteries as well as the mains, for a shed or a power cut.
Yes. A power station runs on its battery, so it burns no fuel and gives off no exhaust fumes; our backup power guides set it apart from petrol generators, which belong outdoors. It is quiet as well: the Jackery Explorer 100 Plus runs at under 30dB, and the Explorer 300D station is fanless.
Around 100 hours on a 1024Wh station, by our home backup guide, which puts a router at about 10 W. A phone on charge draws about the same. The DJI Power 1000 Mini holds 1008Wh, close to that figure; the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro holds 768Wh, three quarters of that capacity.
Yes, if it has a high-wattage USB-C port. The Intenso HE25000 gives up to 140 W from its USB-C2 port, the full rate for a 16-inch MacBook Pro, and comes with a 240 W cable. The Energizer Power Tank gives 140 W in total across its ports, and the Anker 25K 165 W.
Yes, at reduced output. Our solar charging guide puts a cloudy day at 30 to 50% of sunny-day output, and a 100 W panel at 50 to 70 W of usable power in an average Irish summer. Winter charging takes two to three times longer, so from October to February it treats solar as a top-up to mains charging.
The JBL Tuner 3, Majority Histon and Majority Little Shelford cover DAB, DAB+ and FM, and both Majority radios store 20 presets. The Philips TAR2509 and the Philips pocket radio are analogue FM/AM sets with an LED tuning indicator. The Little Shelford and the JBL also play from a phone over Bluetooth.
