In short
Music at home starts with the source: a turntable, a DAB or internet radio, or a CD micro system. The Philips Stevie and Majority Moto turntables have speakers built in and play 78s as well as 33⅓ and 45 rpm records. Others, such as the Audio-Technica AT-LP3XBT, feed powered speakers through a phono preamp or send sound over Bluetooth.
Automatic and manual record decks from Audio-Technica, Sony, Philips and Majority.
Decide between automatic and manual first. The AT-LP3XBT and Sony PS-LX3BT start and finish a side for you, the Majority Moto stops itself at the end of a side, and the AT-LP120XUSB is fully manual, with direct drive and quartz pitch control.

From the product descriptions and our speaker placement guide.
Powered speakers such as the Audio-Technica AT-SP3X take a line-level signal, so a turntable needs a phono preamp in between. The AT-LP3XBT and AT-LP120XUSB have one built in and switchable: on, they go straight into the AT-SP3X's RCA inputs; off, they suit an amplifier with its own phono stage. The Philips Stevie and Majority Moto have speakers in the cabinet, so nothing else is needed to hear a record.
Our speaker placement guide gives simple rules for a stereo pair. Sit at the point of an equal-sided triangle with the speakers, keep them 15 to 30 cm from the back wall to avoid muddy bass, and raise the tweeters to roughly ear level. For a single Bluetooth speaker such as the Marshall Acton III, the guide suggests starting 15 to 20 cm out of a corner and adjusting by ear.
The Majority Robinson 2IR is built to feed an amplifier you already own: optical for a digital connection or RCA for analogue, with the tuning done on the 2IR rather than the amp. It adds internet radio over Wi-Fi to DAB, DAB+ and FM, plays from Bluetooth and has a colour display. For a kitchen or bedside, a DAB+ radio with its own speaker, such as the JBL Tuner 3 or Philips TAR5505, plays on its own.
Yes, on a three-speed deck. The Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB, the Philips Stevie and the Majority Moto run at 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm, so shellac records play as well as LPs. The AT-LP3XBT and the Sony PS-LX3BT run at 33⅓ and 45 rpm, for LPs and singles.
Yes, if it sends sound over Bluetooth. The AT-LP3XBT and Sony PS-LX3BT are Bluetooth decks, the Sony with aptX Adaptive and hi-res wireless audio; the Majority Moto sends sound to wireless speakers; and the Philips Stevie's Bluetooth 5.4 works in both directions, with Auracast. The AT-LP120XUSB is a wired deck, with USB and analogue outputs.
Yes, with a USB turntable. The Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB has a USB output for recording on a computer, alongside its analogue output. The Majority Folio records over USB without extra hardware, so a side played once is captured as files, and it plays back from USB too.
The JBL Tuner 3, which carries an IP68 water and dust rating. It covers DAB, DAB+ and FM, runs for up to 15 hours with Playtime Boost and links other compatible JBL speakers over Auracast. The Majority Little Shelford also runs on batteries; check with Majority before using it near water.
The JBL Horizon 3 is a clock radio with a sunrise alarm that brightens gradually before the alarm sounds, a customisable sleep mode and a USB-C port to charge a phone overnight. The Groov-e Berlin and Majority Little Shelford have dual alarms, and the Little Shelford adds a sleep timer.
The Oakcastle DAB500 can: it covers DAB, DAB+ and FM, with an integrated CD player, USB playback, an AUX input and a remote control. The Philips TAM4205 and TAM3205 have FM radio, the TAM4205 with 20 FM presets, and the Oakcastle CD250 boombox has FM with 30 presets.
