See noise-cancelling headphonesIn short
On a flight, over-ear noise-cancelling headphones give the strongest cancellation, and power banks go in the cabin bag, never in checked luggage. Abroad, the Groov-e 20W travel charger comes with UK, EU, USA and AUS adapters, and IPX8 e-readers such as the PocketBook Verse Pro Color can be read by the pool.
Noise-cancelling headphones
Over-ear pairs from Sony, JBL, Sennheiser, soundcore and Groov-e, with 32 to 76 hours of playback.
On a plane, noise cancelling stays on, so compare that figure: 50 hours on the Sony WH-CH730N and JBL Live 770NC, and 40 on the soundcore Space One. The JBL Tune 780NC's 76 hours is with it off.

Groov-e 20W Travel ChargerHow to choose travel tech
From the product descriptions and our guides.
Over-ear headphones with a cable suit long flights
Noise cancelling works best on constant, low sounds such as engine drone and less well on voices nearby, so a transparency mode helps with boarding announcements. Our noise-cancelling guide suggests 30 hours of battery or more on over-ears, a folding design and a cable for in-flight entertainment. The Sony WH-CH730N folds and weighs 207g, and the Sennheiser ACCENTUM Plus gives 5 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge.
Match the power bank to what you charge
Our travel checklist suggests 10,000 to 20,000mAh for a travel day, roughly two to four full phone charges. Check the output as well as the capacity: the Groov-e 20000mAh puts out up to 15W across two USB-A ports and a USB-C, while the Anker 25K's 165W covers several devices at once, a laptop among them. A built-in USB-C cable, as on the Anker Nano and Anker 25K, means one less lead to forget.

Pick a camera by where you will film
Our travel checklist suggests an action camera for the sea, the pool and the hike, where a phone shouldn't go. The DJI Osmo Action 4 is waterproof to 18 m and the Osmo Action 6 to 20 m without a case, or 60 m with the waterproof case, sold separately. For long days, the Action 4 records for up to 150 minutes, and the Osmo Action 6 Adventure Combo comes with three batteries rated for up to 240 minutes each.
Charge, pair and download before you leave
Our noise-cancelling guide suggests charging headphones fully the night before, bringing the cable in case the battery runs flat, and pairing them with your phone and tablet before you go. Download films, playlists and podcasts while you are still on home Wi-Fi. Our travel checklist adds a spare USB-C cable, since under the EU's common-charger rules nearly all new phones, tablets, cameras and earbuds charge over USB-C.
Good to know
Which headphones can plug into a seat-back screen?
Any pair that comes with a cable. The Sony WH-CH730N includes a detachable 1.2m cable, the Groov-e Rhythm ANC a 3.5mm cable, and the JBL Live 770NC has a wired option. Over Bluetooth, they also connect to your own phone, tablet or e-reader.
Can I take a power bank on a plane?
Yes, in your hand luggage. Airline safety rules keep spare batteries out of the hold, and most carriers cap each power bank at 100Wh. The Energizer 10,000mAh is rated at 37Wh, well inside that. Rules vary between carriers, so check your own airline's before you fly.
Can I read an e-reader by the pool?
Yes, if it is waterproof. The InkPad Color 3, Era Color and Verse Pro Color are rated IPX8, and PocketBook says the InkPad Color 3 can be read by the pool or in the bath. The Verse Lite has no stated water rating, so keep that one in the bag.
Which travel hair dryers work abroad?
The Beurer HC 25 and the Remington D1500 are made to. The HC 25 has a manual 100-240V voltage switch and the D1500 has worldwide voltage. Most of Europe uses two-pin sockets, so a dryer with an Irish three-pin plug still needs a travel adapter there. The Beurer HC 17 does not have the HC 25's voltage switch.
Which camera is easiest to carry on holiday?
The Insta360 GO Ultra: it weighs under 40g and can be worn on its magnetic pendant or carried in its charge case. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is pocket-sized and comes with a wrist strap and protective cover. The Osmo Action 6 weighs 149 g, with a 1.5m extension rod in the Adventure Combo.
