Noise cancelling works best on a steady, low rumble
Our noise-cancelling guide explains that ANC listens through small microphones and plays back an opposite sound wave. It works best on constant low drone, such as train rumble or air conditioning, and less well on sudden sharp sounds like a nearby conversation. A transparency or ambient mode lets a platform announcement through without taking the buds out, and the Sony WF-C710N and Groov-e Vibe Buds ANC both have one.
In-ear and open-ear suit different journeys
In-ear buds seal the ear canal, and our noise-cancelling guide calls them light and pocketable for commuting, the gym or travelling light. Open-ear models sit on or around the ear instead, so you keep hearing the world around you. Sony describes the LinkBuds Clip as made for listening while keeping natural awareness of your surroundings. Open-ear models trade some isolation for that awareness.
Capacity and wattage do different jobs
Capacity, in mAh, is how much charge a bank holds; wattage is how fast it can deliver that charge, which decides whether it can keep up with a laptop. Groov-e describes its 10000mAh bank as enough for a phone, a pair of earbuds and somebody else's phone, and its power level indicator shows the charge before you leave the house. For a lighter bag, the Anker Nano 22.5W holds 5,000mAh and fits in a pocket.
Choose a bag for the laptop and the journey
Size comes first, then how you travel. For wet weather, the Blaupunkt Connected backpack has water-repellent, anti-scratch fabric and a loop strap for hanging it on a suitcase. What does adaptive noise cancelling do?
It changes the level of cancelling to match the noise around you, rather than applying one fixed setting. The JBL Tour Pro 3, JBL Tune Buds 2 and soundcore Liberty 5 have it. The Tune Buds 2 add TalkThru, which lets voices through without removing a bud.
Are open-ear earbuds any good on a noisy train?
They play without sealing the ear canal, so more of the train noise reaches you than with in-ear buds. If the rumble bothers you, the soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro adds adaptive noise cancelling to an open-ear design, with 34 hours of play including the case.
Which power bank can charge a laptop?
The Anker 25K: it has 165W of total output and charges several devices at once, a laptop included, at speed. The Anker Nano 30W's built-in USB-C cable also charges laptops. Before buying for a laptop, check that it charges over USB-C and how many watts its own charger supplies.
