How to choose a coffee machine

Start with how much you want to do
Our bean-to-cup vs pod guide sets out the trade-off. A bean-to-cup machine grinds fresh beans and has the lowest cost per cup, but costs more to buy and takes a bit more cleaning. A pod machine is fast and consistent with almost no cleaning, but each cup costs more and you are tied to one pod system. An espresso machine such as the De'Longhi Stilosa is the hands-on choice: you make each shot and froth the milk yourself.
Get the grind right for espresso
Espresso needs a fine grind and a cafetière a coarse one. The De'Longhi KG79 grinds with flat stainless-steel burrs, holds 120 g of beans and has a cup selector for 2 to 12 cups. The Outin Fino uses a 7-point conical burr and holds 25 g of beans. The Morphy Richards Brew & Blend is a blade grinder for up to 60g at a time, and also grinds seeds and spices.
Choose how you froth milk
Automatic systems do it for you: the Rivelia's LatteCrema Hot system, the Ninja AutoBarista's steam wand with 4 froth presets and the Vertuo Lattissima's one-touch milk. On the Sage Bambino Plus and the Sage Vertuo Creatista you choose the milk temperature and texture, 3 of each on the Creatista. A manual steam wand, as on the De'Longhi Dedica Duo and Stilosa, leaves the texture to you; add a 350 ml milk jug.
Keep it clean and descaled
Limescale builds up faster in hard water and makes a machine slower and noisier, so don't ignore the descale alert: it protects the pump and heater. Many bean-to-cup and pod machines run an automatic descale cycle, and the Bosch Tassimo My Way 2 has an automatic cleaning and descaling programme. Some machines help with daily cleaning: the Ninja AutoBarista's steam wand purges itself with an automatic rinse after use. Our descaling guide explains each step.
Good to know
Bean-to-cup or espresso machine?
Choose bean-to-cup if you want a drink at the touch of a button, and an espresso machine if you want to make each one yourself. Some bean-to-cup machines sit between the two: the Sage Barista Express Impress grinds the beans, and you set the grind size and dose and froth the milk with its steam wand.
Which capsules do Vertuo and Tassimo machines take?
Each takes its own system. The De'Longhi Vertuo Pop and Vertuo Lattissima take Nespresso Vertuo capsules and read the barcode on each one to set the brew. The Bosch Tassimo My Way 2 takes Tassimo pods, whose barcode its INTELLIBREW system reads to set the temperature, water amount and brewing time.
Do I need a separate grinder?
Not for a bean-to-cup machine, which has one built in. For an espresso machine that takes ground coffee, such as the Dedica Duo, the De'Longhi KG79 has 16 settings from fine to coarse, and the Sage Smart Grinder Pro has 60 and grinds straight into the portafilter.
Can I make cold coffee?
Yes. The De'Longhi Dedica Duo has Cold Brew technology, the Ninja Luxe Cafe Pro makes espresso, filter coffee and cold brew, and the Vertuo Pop has a cold brew-style size. The Ninja DualBrew also has an Over Ice setting that makes up for dilution.
How often should I descale a coffee machine?
Every 1 to 3 months in hard-water areas, or whenever the machine prompts you, according to our descaling guide. Use the manufacturer's descaler and the machine's descale programme, then run clean water through to flush it. Filtered water slows the build-up of scale.
Can a pod machine make tea or hot chocolate?
The Bosch Tassimo My Way 2 can: its pods include tea and hot chocolate as well as espresso and cappuccino, and you can set the strength, temperature and cup size and save favourites. The Nespresso Vertuo Pop makes five coffee sizes, from an espresso to a mug-sized coffee.
