How to choose an electric grill or pizza oven

Grill and smoker, or grill and griddle
The Ninja Woodfire grills are grills and smokers: electricity does the cooking, and a smoker box burns natural wood pellets, so one scoop adds smoke to any cooking function. The Cecotec PerfectCountry is a 2000 W grill and griddle on steel legs, with 5 power levels, a lower shelf and a folding lid that works as a convection oven. Choose a Woodfire for smoke flavour and the Cecotec for a flat plate for eggs, fish and vegetables.
Size the grill to what you cook
Capacity is given in food, not people. The OG701 is the compact Woodfire: 46 cm wide and 12 kg, with room for 2 racks of ribs. The Woodfire XL (OG850) and Pro Connect XL (OG901) each take 40 hot dogs or two whole 3kg chickens; the OG850 is also listed for 6 steaks. The OG901 is 57 cm wide and adds the Pro Connect app, so you can control the grill and follow the cook from your phone.
Plan where it will stand
An electric grill needs a socket within reach: the OG701 has a 2 m cord. The OG850 and OG901 are described for gardens, patios, campsites and balconies. The Ninja Woodfire stand has an adjustable height and a side table, and fits the OO101, OG701, OG850 and OG901; the Cecotec has its own steel legs. Between cooks in Irish weather, a water-resistant Woodfire grill cover protects the OG700 series, which includes the OG701.
Choose a pizza oven by where it will live
The Kenwood My Pizzeria and the Sage Smart Oven Pizzaiolo sit on a kitchen worktop; the Sage bakes a 30 cm pizza in 2 minutes. The Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven is for the garden: it makes no-turn pizzas in under 3 minutes with 6 pizza presets, and its smoker box burns the same Woodfire pellets as the grills. Good to know
Do electric grills need charcoal or gas?
No. The Ninja Woodfire OG701, OG850 and OG901 and the Cecotec PerfectCountry run on mains electricity, and so does the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven. The Woodfire models burn natural wood pellets in a smoker box for flavour, not as fuel, so the pellets don't heat the grill.
Can an electric grill stay outside all year?
The Ninja Woodfire grills are built for it: they are rated IPX4 and described as weather resistant for year-round outdoor use. The Cecotec PerfectCountry is IPX4 too, which protects it from splashes, but its description says not to leave it out in rain or snow.
Can I use an electric grill indoors?
Some can. The Cecotec PerfectCountry can be used indoors as a griddle, without the lid and at least 30 cm from walls and other objects. The Ninja Woodfire grills are sold as outdoor grills, and the OG850 and OG901 are for outdoor use only.
Can the Ninja Woodfire grills air fry?
Yes. The OG701, OG850 and OG901 come with a crisper basket, and the Woodfire XL (OG850) basket air fries up to 1.8kg of food. The OG701 and OG901 have 7 cooking functions, including Air Fry, Bake, Roast, Dehydrate and Reheat; the OG850 has 4: BBQ Grill, BBQ Smoker, Air Fry and Roast.
Do I need a meat thermometer?
Not with the Ninja OG850 or OG901, whose built-in probe tracks the food as it cooks. For the OG701 or the Cecotec, the Ninja ProChef probe withstands up to 370°C and reaches up to 50 m over Bluetooth, and the MEATER Pro Duo monitors two foods at once.
What else can the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven cook?
It roasts, bakes, smokes and dehydrates as well as making pizza. The OO101 has 8 functions: Pizza, Max Roast, Gourmet Roast, Top Heat, Bake, Smoker, Dehydrate and Keep Warm. It works from 40°C to 370°C and fits a whole 3kg chicken with vegetables, a 5kg beef joint or 2 racks of ribs.
