Weigh speed against space
A portable SSD has no moving parts, so it is silent and shock-resistant, and it copies large folders far faster than a hard drive: the Intenso UX100 reads at up to 500 MB/s, against up to 85 MB/s on the Intenso Memory Case. A hard drive holds more per drive, which suits a full backup of a photo library. An SSD suits the files you carry and work on.
Keep one copy at home and one with you
Keep a full copy of your photos and files on a drive that stays at home, such as the 2TB Intenso Memory Case, and carry the files you are working on with you on an SSD, a stick or a card. The PNY Elite and Pro Elite come with Acronis True Image software for backing up files and folders. The Intenso Rainbow Line 3-pack comes in yellow, red and black, so each person or project can have its own colour.
Match the plugs to your devices
Check which ports your phone, laptop and TV have before you choose. The Intenso UX100 SSDs and Twist Line sticks carry a USB-C plug and a USB-A plug, so one drive goes into either kind of port with no adapter. The PNY Pro Elite has a USB-C port and comes with a USB-C to C cable and a USB-C to A cable. The Intenso Memory Case and Memory Play hard drives connect with a USB-A cable.
For video, check the V30 rating
For an action camera or a DSLR, check the video speed class. V30 means a minimum sustained 30 MB/s, enough for 4K UHD and Full HD video, and the Intenso Professional microSD cards carry it. They read at up to 100 MB/s, so copying a full card to a laptop is quick, and the SD adapter in the pack lets one card move between a phone, a camera and a laptop card slot.

Will a portable drive work with a Mac?
Yes, for the drives that list macOS. The Intenso UX100 and Twist Line list Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.x or later, and the UX100 comes formatted exFAT. The PNY Elite lists Windows and Mac OS X, and the Intenso Memory Play works on a Windows 10 or macOS 10.x computer. The PNY Pro Elite lists no operating system, so check with PNY first.
Can I copy photos straight off my phone?
Yes, if your phone supports USB OTG. The Intenso Twist Line sticks and UX100 SSDs plug into compatible Android phones and tablets by their USB-C end, and into a laptop by the USB-A end, so photos and videos can be copied across on the spot.
Can the Memory Play record from my TV?
Yes, if your TV or satellite receiver has a PVR function and a USB port. Recordings go to the drive, and time-shift lets you pause live TV and pick it up later. A wall bracket in the box mounts the drive out of sight behind the TV.
Does a portable hard drive need a power socket?
Not the Intenso ones. The Memory Case and Memory Play draw their power over the USB cable, so there is no mains adapter to find a socket for. The Memory Case connects over USB 3.2 and also works on USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.
Is a microSD card tough enough for an action camera?
The Intenso Professional cards are made for one. Intenso rates them waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof and X-ray proof, for use from -25°C to 85°C and storage from -40°C to 85°C. Their write speed of up to 45 MB/s keeps up with 4K video, and Intenso says they handle fast-paced footage without dropped frames.
Which memory stick works in a car stereo or TV?
One with a standard USB-A plug. The Intenso Rainbow Line 3-pack lists TVs and car stereos, and has a cap to cover the plug in a pocket or bag. The Twist Line's USB-A end also suits TVs, and its aluminium body swivels to cover the plug you are not using.
