How to choose a drone, action camera or pocket camera
From the product descriptions and our action cameras guide.
Check a drone's weight and its sensor size
The DJI Flip and Lito 1 weigh under 249 g and the Mini 5 Pro 249.9 g. The Flip can be flown without training or an exam in most regions, but rules differ, so check the local ones before the first flight. For low light, compare sensor size: 1-inch on the Mini 5 Pro and on the Air 3S wide camera, 1/1.3-inch on the Flip and 1/2-inch on the Lito 1.
A 360 camera saves aiming, an action camera saves editing time
A single-lens action camera records what it points at. A 360 camera records the whole scene and you choose the angle when you edit, and 360° footage may need more editing than standard footage. The Osmo 360 can also film through one lens at 5K/60fps, and the Insta360 X3 at 4K. The Osmo Action 6 sits in between: its square sensor powers a 4K Custom mode, so you shoot once and crop to different aspect ratios afterwards.
A pocket camera steadies the shot with a gimbal
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and Pocket 4 pair a 1-inch sensor with a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, which steadies handheld footage without the shake often seen when filming on a phone. The Pocket 4 also records 14 stops of dynamic range, for more detail in highlights and shadows. For talking to camera, the Osmo Pocket 4 Creator Combo and Pocket 3 Creator Combo come with a DJI Mic 2 transmitter, a battery handle and a mini tripod, and the Pocket 3 Creator Combo adds a wide-angle lens.
Good to know
Which microphone kit suits two people?
A kit with two transmitters: the DJI Mic Mini 2 with charging case, the DJI Mic 3 2-Person or the EasyPix MyStudio Wireless Mic Duo. Each has two clip-on mics and one receiver, so two people are recorded at once. The Osmo Action 6 can also take up to two DJI transmitters directly through OsmoAudio.
What does a Fly More Combo add?
Spare batteries and a way to charge them. The DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo comes with the DJI RC 2, three batteries, a two-way charging hub, ND filters, spare propellers and a shoulder bag. The Lito 1 and Avata 360 Fly More Combos also have three batteries and a charging hub.
Can I fly a drone without a separate controller?
Yes, with the DJI Neo 2 or the DJI Flip. The Neo 2 takes off from your palm, responds to gestures and has an app-only mode. The Flip connects to the DJI Fly app over Wi-Fi Direct and takes "Hey Fly" voice commands. The Lito 1, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3S and Avata 360 come with a DJI controller.
How waterproof are the DJI Osmo Action and Osmo 360 cameras?
The Osmo Action 6 is waterproof to 20 m without a case and the Osmo Action 4 to 18 m; the Osmo 360 is rated IP68, waterproof to 10 m. The Osmo Action 6 reaches 60 m in the Waterproof Case, sold separately.
Can I record without a memory card?
Yes, on a camera or drone with storage built in. The DJI Osmo Pocket 4 has 107 GB, the Osmo 360 105 GB free of its 128 GB, the Osmo Action 6 50 GB, and the Mini 5 Pro and Air 3S 42 GB each. For more space, the Action 6 takes microSD cards up to 1 TB and the Air 3S up to 512 GB.
