Buying guideTablet Buying Guide: What to Look For in 2026
In short
Communion and Confirmation money can buy a child's first tech of their own: headphones, an instant camera, a tablet or a speaker. For younger children, choose headphones with a volume limit, such as the 85 dB cap on the JBL Junior Free. The instax mini 12 and mini 13 print a 62 × 46 mm picture on instax mini film.
Kids' headphones
Volume-limited headphones and earbuds sized for children, from JBL, myFirst and Philips.
Compare the fit first. The JBL Junior Free and myFirst AirWaves are open-ear, the JBL Junior 320 and Philips TAK2000 sit on the ear, the JBL Junior 470NC goes over the ear with noise cancelling, and the myFirst CareBuds are earbuds.

How to choose a Communion or Confirmation gift
From the product descriptions and our guides.
Headphones should suit the child and where they listen
Open-ear models such as the JBL Junior Free and myFirst AirWaves leave the ear canal clear, so a child can still hear a parent, the doorbell or the traffic. For a long journey, the wired Philips TAK2000 folds into a bag, needs no charging, and a second pair can plug into it through daisy-chain sharing. The JBL Junior 470NC adds noise cancelling for a plane or the back of a busy car, and the myFirst CareBuds run for 20 hours with their charging case.
An instant camera gives the family prints from the day
The instax mini 12 has a selfie mirror and a close-up range of 0.3 to 0.5 m, for a photo with a grandparent or of the cake. The instax mini 13 has a 2 s and 10 s self-timer instead, so whoever holds the camera can join the group shot. The myFirst Camera Insta 20 is designed for children aged 6 and up, with a 2″ screen to frame each photo before it prints, and it records video too.
A tablet should fit the child's age and schoolwork
Our tablet buying guide suggests about 8″ for portability, 10 to 11″ as an all-rounder, and a Galaxy Tab A-series for children and casual use. The Galaxy Tab A11+ adds IP52 dust and water protection and is set to receive at least five years of Android updates. For written homework, the Tab S10 Lite includes an S Pen with Handwriting Help and Solve Math and plays up to 16 hours of video; its charger is sold separately.
Speakers, earbuds and trackers suit an older child
Our portable speaker guide suggests IPX4 for the garden and IP67 for the beach or pool. The JBL Flip 7 and Charge 6 are rated IP68, link to other JBL speakers over Auracast, and the Charge 6 can top up a phone from its own battery. For a sporty teenager, the Fitbit Charge 6 has built-in GPS, over 40 exercise modes, up to 7 days of battery and water resistance to 50 metres.

Good to know
Which kids' headphones limit the volume?
The JBL Junior Free, myFirst CareBuds, myFirst AirWaves and Philips TAK2000 are limited to 85 dB. The JBL Junior 320 and Junior 470NC hold the volume at a reduced level for younger listeners, though JBL gives no dB figure for them. The Junior Free also supports parental control for anything beyond its limit.
What do the instax and myFirst cameras print on?
The instax mini 12 and mini 13 print on instax mini film, with a 62 × 46 mm picture on each print. The myFirst Camera Insta 20 prints in full colour on thermal paper, with no ink cartridges, and its refills are thermal paper.
Can I add storage to a Galaxy tablet?
Yes. The Galaxy Tab A11 has 64GB and a microSD slot, and the Tab A11+ and Tab S10 Lite have 128GB and take microSD cards of up to 2TB. The Intenso Professional 128GB microSDXC card reads at up to 100 MB/s and comes with an SD adapter.
Which tablet is easiest for a younger child to hold?
The Galaxy Tab A11. It weighs 335 g, is 8 mm thin, and its 8.7″ screen is compact enough to hold in one hand. The screen runs at 1340 x 800 for e-books, games and video, and a 5MP front camera covers video calls with family. It is a Wi-Fi only model.
Are the speakers and earbuds water-resistant?
Yes, to different levels. The JBL Flip 7 and Charge 6 are rated IP68 for dust and immersion. The Shokz OpenFit Air and OpenDots ONE are IP54, the myFirst CareBuds IPX4 against sweat and light rain, and the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 IPX2.
