An ice cream maker needs a day's planning
A CREAMi base has to freeze solid in its tub before processing, so keep a filled tub or two in the freezer through the holidays. The NC300UK makes more than ice cream: its programmes include Smoothie Bowl and Milkshake, and Mix-In spreads chocolate chips or biscuit pieces through a finished tub. Re-Spin helps when a base is extra-cold. For cones, the Swirl dispenses soft serve from a handle.
Pick a camera for the water or for everyday drops
For the pool and the beach, the Aquapix W3027 Wave and W3048 Edge are sealed without a separate case. Check that all covers and locks are closed before swimming, and open the battery compartment once the camera is dry. The W3048 Edge adds a 2.0-inch front screen for underwater selfies, and both take a microSD card of up to 128 GB, sold separately. On dry land, the myFirst Camera 3, Camera 50 and Insta 20 have front and rear cameras, and the Insta 20 prints photos without ink.
A 3D pen suits rainy days and older children
The 3dPen Make charges over USB-C and then runs on its battery, so a child is not tied to a socket. Each refill pack holds five PCL spools, in cool blues, greens and purples or warm reds, oranges and yellows; buy both for the full set of colours. For younger children, the Frame Doodle 9 is made for ages 3 and up: they trace a picture placed underneath and clear the screen with one button.
Long journeys call for comfort and a volume cap
For a ferry or a flight, the JBL Junior 470NC cancels noise over the ear. The Philips TAK2000 is wired and folds into a bag. At the beach or a campsite, the JBL Junior Free and myFirst AirWaves sit beside the ear rather than in it, so a call from the shore still gets through. For wet days, the myFirst CareBuds carry an IPX4 rating.

How long does the ice cream base need in the freezer?
About a day. Ninja says to freeze the filled tub for 24 hours for the NC300UK and the Swirl, and overnight for the Deluxe. Then fit the tub into the CREAMi and pick a programme; the NC300UK processes it in minutes. Its tubs, lids and paddle can go on the dishwasher's top rack.
Which cameras can go in the water?
The Aquapix W3027 Wave and W3048 Edge, which are waterproof to 3 metres without an extra housing, so they suit pools, beaches and snorkelling. The myFirst Camera 2, 3 and 50 are built to survive drops, but myFirst does not describe them as waterproof, so keep them away from the pool.
Is the 3D pen safe for children?
It is made for children aged 8 and up. The myFirst 3dPen Make uses low-temperature PCL filament, which myFirst describes as non-toxic and safer for children than traditional ABS, and its cool-touch nozzle is designed to avoid burns. An adult nearby still makes sense for a first go.
Can two children listen to the same film on a journey?
Yes, with the Philips TAK2000. Its daisy-chain sharing lets a second pair of headphones plug in from the first, so both children hear the same film from one tablet. The TAK2000 also has a child-sized on-ear fit and an ear-cup window that can be customised.
Which CREAMi has the biggest tubs?
The CREAMi XL and the Deluxe. The XL comes with two 710 ml tubs, and Ninja says the Deluxe's 24 oz pints, about 710 ml, hold 50% more ice cream. The NC300UK has three smaller tubs that make up to 1.4 L in all, and the Swirl has two 480 ml pints.
