In short
For many Irish homes, a fan is enough for everyday summer comfort: it does not lower the room temperature, but it moves air across your skin. The cordless Shark FlexBreeze runs for up to 20 hours on battery. For cold drinks without ice, the Ninja SLUSHi turns juice into slush in as little as 30 minutes.

How to keep cool: fans, frozen treats and purifiers
From the product descriptions and our guides.
Keep the sun out first, then add airflow
Our summer cooling guide, drawing on HSE hot-weather advice, suggests closing curtains and sun-facing windows by day and opening windows at night when the air outside is cooler. Then match the fan to the space. A desk fan suits a home office and a pedestal fan moves air through a larger space; the Dimplex Duo Cool converts between the two, at 91.7 cm or 43.5 cm tall. For a patio, the Shark FlexBreeze and HydroGo are made from UV and water-resistant materials, and the HydroGo is rated IPX5.
A SLUSHi works on the day, a CREAMi needs a frozen base
The SLUSHi chills juice, a frappé or a milkshake in its own vessel, with no ice to water it down, and once frozen a batch holds for up to 12 hours. A CREAMi works from a base you make ahead and freeze in one of its tubs. Filled tubs keep in the freezer, so the NC300UK's three tubs can hold three flavours ready to process. The Swirl dispenses soft serve with a pull of its handle, and the CREAMi Deluxe turns one frozen base into two flavours.
Choose a purifier by what it tells you and where it runs
Shark's purifiers sense the air and adjust the fan themselves. The BreatheClear Compact samples the air 3,600 times an hour and its Air Index shows particle and VOC levels. For a bedroom, the HP150UK runs quietly with dimmable lights. The Compact Pro and HP150UK add an anti-odour cartridge for cooking and pet smells, and their NeverChange5 filter is rated for up to five years under Shark's test conditions.
Good to know
Which fans work without a plug?
The Shark FlexBreeze, FlexBreeze HydroGo and ChillPill run on a rechargeable battery. Shark quotes up to 20 hours for the FlexBreeze, 12 for the HydroGo on speed 1 without mist, and 11 for the ChillPill on speed 1. The handheld Dyson HushJet Mini lasts up to 6 hours and charges over USB-C in 3 hours.
How long does the Ninja CREAMi take to make ice cream?
About a day, because the base has to freeze in its tub first: 24 hours for the NC300UK and the Swirl and overnight for the Deluxe; the CREAMi XL also works from a base you froze yourself. Processing then takes minutes. Eat it straight away for a softer texture or put it back in the freezer. If it has to be today, the SLUSHi needs no frozen base.
How does a FrostVault cooler keep food out of the meltwater?
With a separate Dry Zone that keeps food cold but clear of melting ice, designed to stay below 4.5 °C. On the Go backpacks it takes 7.4 L of the 17 L model or 9.8 L of the 23 L, and on the wheeled FrostVaults it is a drawer.
Does an air purifier cool a room?
No. As our Irish summer guide puts it, a purifier filters particles from the air but does not cool the room. It helps when you keep the house shut against the sun during the day and the rooms start to feel stale, especially with pets, dust, pollen or cooking smells.
How many cans fit in a FrostVault cooler with ice?
Fewer than without, because the ice takes up room. The 28 L wheeled cooler holds up to 48 cans without ice and 20 with it, and the 42 L holds 68 or 32. Ninja rates the Go backpacks at 24 cans for the 17 L and 36 for the 23 L, without saying how many fit with ice.
