How to choose a heated blanket, fan or clock radio
From the product descriptions and our guides.
Decide between under the sheet and on top
Our electric blankets guide sets out the two types. A heated mattress cover, or underblanket, fits under your sheet and warms the bed before and during sleep; the Dimplex DMC3002 has fitting straps to keep it in place. An overblanket sits on top, so it can also go on the sofa. The Imetec 16754 overblanket measures about 180 × 180 cm and the Beurer XXL 200 × 150 cm. Whichever you choose, check it for damage before use and don't fold it while it is switched on.
Look for a timer or auto shut-off
The Dreamland 16994C single warmer and the Imetec 16754 overblanket have timers of 1, 3 or 9 hours, the Beurer XXL switches off after about 3 hours, and the Imetec Adapto 16753 has auto shut-off. The Dimplex covers warm fast and can then drop to a gentle setting for the night. The Dimplex, Dreamland, Imetec and Beurer blankets are machine washable; the Dreamland and Beurer controllers detach, and the Beurer is washed at 30°C with its controller off.
Choose a fan by where it will stand
Our guide to keeping your home cool in an Irish summer lists noise level, timers and sleep modes as the points to check for a bedroom. The Dimplex Duo Cool stands 91.7 cm tall as a pedestal fan beside the bed or 43.5 cm as a desk fan, with a Sleep mode, a remote and a child lock. The bladeless Shark TurboBlade has 10 speeds, oscillation and a remote. The Shark ChillPill is a slim personal fan, and the 210 g Dyson HushJet Mini is a handheld fan whose charging stand for desk use is sold separately.
Choose a clock radio by how it wakes you
Think about what wakes you and how it is powered. The Philips Cube wakes you to a tone or the radio and has a dedicated button for the clock change twice a year. The Groov-e Rise is a mains-powered FM clock radio with snooze. The JBL Horizon 3 and Groov-e Atlas II also play music from your phone over Bluetooth, and the JBL has a customisable sleep mode for the end of the day.
Good to know
Can two people set different heat on one blanket?
Yes, on the dual-control models. The Dimplex DMC3002 double and DMC3003 king mattress covers give each side its own control with 4 heat settings and an extra foot-warmth zone. The Imetec 16754 overblanket has two detachable controllers with 6 settings per side. Single-bed models such as the Imetec Adapto 16753 have one control.
Which clock radios dim at night?
The Philips Cube, Groov-e Rise and Groov-e Atlas II have displays you can dim or adjust, and the Rise also has a sleep timer that switches it off after you drop off. To wake more gently, the JBL Horizon 3 has a sunrise alarm that brightens ahead of the alarm sound, and the Sony Cube a gradual wake alarm.
Do I need a screen on a sleep tracker?
No. The Amazfit Helio ring and the Garmin CIRQA band have no screen: you read your sleep in the Zepp app or in Garmin's Connect app, where the CIRQA gives a sleep score, sleep stages and coaching. The Fitbit Inspire 3 has an AMOLED colour touchscreen, tracks sleep stages and blood oxygen, and gives a Daily Readiness Score.
Can a clock radio charge my phone overnight?
Yes, if it has a charging pad or port. The Groov-e Atlas II has a built-in wireless charging pad, so a compatible phone charges without a cable, plus a USB port for a second device. The Philips Cube and JBL Horizon 3 each have a USB-C port that charges a phone on the nightstand.
How loud is a bedroom fan?
It depends on the fan and the speed. The Dimplex Duo Cool runs between 36 dB and 54 dB, and the Dyson HushJet Mini from 52 dBA in its quiet mode to 72.5 dBA at most. Shark gives no decibel figure for the TurboBlade, and the Dyson's motor sits on an anti-vibration rubber mount.
