In short
For the school year at home, the Epson XP-3200 prints homework on both sides of the page automatically, Ninja Thirsti bottles take fizzy drinks as well as hot ones, and a toastie maker covers hot lunches. Kids' headphones and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+, with at least five years of OS updates, cover reading and films.
Drink bottles
Ninja Thirsti bottles in 530ml and 700ml that take fizzy drinks and keep them cold for up to 24 hours.
Pick the size first. Ninja sells the 700ml as the larger size, for a day out rather than a commute; the 530ml is the smaller bottle for everyday use. Both have Triple Thermo insulation and are dishwasher-safe.

Lunchbox toasties
Toastie makers, panini presses and a small grill for a hot lunch or an after-school snack.
Compare how each one cooks. The Ninja ST200UK and ST202UK flip from a wide-slot toaster to a grill and panini press, the Sage sandwich press has an adjustable-height top plate for open sandwiches, and the Russell Hobbs and Morphy Richards make deep-fill toasties.

Printers and ink
All-in-one printers from Epson and HP for homework, projects and school forms.
Compare the ink system first: the Epson XP-3200 and WorkForce WF-2930DWF take individual 604 cartridges, and the HP Smart Tank 5105 has an integrated ink tank. The WF-2930DWF adds fax and a 30-sheet document feeder for multi-page forms.

How to choose a printer, toastie maker and tablet for school
From the product descriptions and our guides.
Plan for the morning rush and the washing-up
The Ninja ST200UK has a crumb tray that catches crumbs in both its toaster and grill positions. The George Foreman Small Fit Grill goes from switch-on to plate in under 6 minutes and collects fat in a clip-in drip tray. The Russell Hobbs has a ready light, and its non-stick plates wipe clean with a damp cloth while warm. The Sage sandwich press locks its plates together with a clip and stores upright.
Most of a printer's running cost is ink
Our printer running costs guide puts the real cost in ink: XL cartridges give more pages for less per page, and printing double-sided halves paper use. The Epson XP-3200, WorkForce WF-2930DWF and HP ENVY Inspire 7220e print on both sides automatically. The HP Smart Tank 5105 comes with a 135ml black bottle and three 50ml colour bottles for its integrated ink tank, which is built for extensive printing without frequent refills.
Match the tablet to the child
Our back to school tech checklist lists a tablet for reading, notes and younger students. The Galaxy Tab A11 weighs 335g and has an octa-core processor with 4GB of RAM. The Galaxy Tab A11+ adds an IP52 rating against dust and water and takes cards of up to 2 TB. For children aged 3 and up, the myFirst Frame Doodle 9 is a drawing tablet: they trace a picture placed under its overlay, and one button clears the screen.
Good to know
Which ink does the Epson XP-3200 take?
It takes Epson 604 cartridges: a pigment black and separate cyan, magenta and yellow, in standard or XL sizes. When one colour runs out, you replace just that cartridge. The WorkForce WF-2930DWF takes the same 604 cartridges, so one set of spares fits the XP-3200 and the WF-2930DWF.
Do kids' headphones need charging?
Not all of them. The Philips 2000 Series and JBL Junior 320 are wired, so they need no charging and plug into the Galaxy Tab A11's 3.5 mm headphone socket. The myFirst AirWaves run for up to 6 hours per charge, and the JBL Junior Free and Junior 470NC connect wirelessly.
Can the Ninja Thirsti bottles take fizzy drinks?
Yes. Both the 530ml and the 700ml Ninja Thirsti bottles are rated for carbonated drinks, such as sparkling water, as well as hot drinks; Ninja notes that most insulated bottles rule fizzy drinks out. Hot drinks stay hot for up to 12 hours, and ice lasts for up to two days.
How long does the Galaxy Tab A11+ battery last?
Samsung rates it for 96 hours of endurance per full cycle in EU energy label testing, and for 1,200 charge cycles. The battery is 6,840 mAh and charges over USB-C. For comparison, the 8.7-inch Galaxy Tab A11 has a 5,100mAh battery.
Can two children listen to one tablet at the same time?
Yes, with the Philips 2000 Series. Its daisy-chain sharing lets a second pair of headphones plug in from the first, so two children can listen to the same film on a long journey. The headphones are wired, sized for children and fold, and the ear-cup window can be customised.
