How to choose a tech gift for Father's Day
From the product descriptions and our guides.
Battery features make a speaker more useful away from the house
For long days outside, look past loudness to power. The JBL Xtreme 5 has a replaceable battery, so a charged spare can stretch a session, and its USB charge-out tops up a phone. The soundcore Boom 2 Pro runs up to 20 hours, recharges at 30W and has a 10W power bank output. For a singer, the PartyBox Encore 2 has a microphone in the box.
TV headphones and travel headphones solve different problems
For TV at his own volume, the Sennheiser RS 195 takes sound from a transmitter base that also charges it. The base takes analogue or optical input, and the headphones have a listening mode for speech. For trains and flights, noise cancelling matters more. The JBL Live 770NC runs up to 50 hours with noise cancelling on, and a five-minute charge adds about four hours of play.
GPS hours and navigation separate an outdoor watch from a fitness band
On a long hike, GPS battery and mapping count most. The Garmin fenix E gives up to 42 hours on GPS, or 75 in Max Battery mode, and plans a round-trip route from a distance you enter. The Galaxy Watch Ultra uses dual-frequency GPS and has Track Back to retrace a recorded route. For steps, heart rate and sleep alone, a fitness tracker may do, with longer battery life.
A dash cam needs the right card and power to watch the car when parked
To film a parked car, the camera has to stay powered once the engine stops. The Nextbase OBD cable plugs into the car's OBD port without fuse taps and works with the 322GW, 422GW and 522GW; the Piqo 2K needs a separately sold OBD cable for Smart Parking. For storage, Nextbase's 64GB U3 card holds about 8 hours of HD, or about 4 with a rear camera, before the oldest unprotected footage is recorded over.
Good to know
What date is Father's Day in Ireland in 2027?
Sunday 20 June 2027. In Ireland and the UK, Father's Day is the third Sunday in June, so the date moves from year to year. In 2028 it falls on Sunday 18 June, in 2029 on Sunday 17 June and in 2030 on Sunday 16 June.
Can the Nextbase 322GW, 422GW and 522GW take a rear camera?
Yes. Each takes a Nextbase Series 2 rear module with a rear, cabin or rear window view, such as the Series 2 Rear Window Camera. With it fitted, the 422GW and 522GW record 1080p front and back, or 1440p at the front with 720p behind; the 322GW records 1080p at the front with 720p behind. The Piqo 2K does not take one.
Can JBL speakers play the same music together?
Yes, with Auracast. The JBL Xtreme 5, Boombox 4 and PartyBox Encore 2 use it to link to other compatible JBL speakers and play the same music, which spreads the sound across a bigger space such as a garden. The Marshall Acton III and Stanmore III connect over Bluetooth or a 3.5mm cable instead.
Do outdoor smartwatches work with an iPhone?
Some do. The Garmin fenix E pairs with iPhone and Android, the Amazfit T-Rex 3 works with iOS 14.0 or later and Android 7.0 or later, and the Amazfit Cheetah lists iOS and Android. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra needs a compatible Android phone for set-up, and some of its health features need a Samsung Galaxy phone.
Which outdoor smartwatches can he swim with?
The Garmin fenix E, Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and Amazfit T-Rex 3 are rated 10 ATM, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra has a multi-sport mode that covers swimming. The Amazfit Cheetah is rated 5 ATM and described as swim ready. No water rating is listed for the Amazfit Balance 2.
