How to choose hair styling tools

An air styler replaces several tools, a dryer does one job faster
If you curl, smooth and add volume most days, an air styler keeps it to one handle: the Shark FlexStyle converts from a hair dryer into a styler with a twist. If you mainly want hair dry quickly, a high-speed dryer is simpler. The Shark SpeedStyle Pro HD731UK has three speeds and five heat settings, ceramic technology and a 2.4 m cord.
Finer heat control helps with fine or coloured hair
More settings let you find the lowest heat that still works. The Shark Glam 5-in-1 has five heat settings rather than the usual three, which gives finer control on fine or coloured hair. The Remington S9100 has a PRO+ setting that fixes its ceramic plates at 185°C. The Dreame AirStyle Pro and Dazzle check their temperature 300 times a second, and the Shark FlexStyle 1,000 times.
Check the safety and travel features on hot tools
The Remington S5525, S8500 and S5805 switch off after 60 minutes and have worldwide voltage. The S8500 and S5805 also have a plate lock for storage and come with a pouch, a heat-resistant one with the S8500. The Shark SilkiPro has a motion sensor that responds to whether the tool is in use. For a bag, the Remington D1500 travel dryer has a folding handle, a compact diffuser and worldwide voltage.
A clipper with colour-coded guards makes home haircuts simpler
For the family's hair, the Remington ColourCut HC5035 has nine colour-coded combs from 1.5 to 25 mm, so grades are hard to mix up, plus a taper lever, scissors and a neck brush. For facial hair, nose and ears, the PG6020 kit has a detail trimmer, a nose and ear trimmer and a mini foil shaver. Our guide suggests cutting in a bathroom, with a mirror or a helper, on damp hair.

Is an air styler easier to use on the back of your head?
Coanda curlers make it easier. On the Shark Glam 4-in-1, the curling tools wrap hair using airflow rather than a hot barrel, which is gentler on the hair and considerably easier at the back of your own head. The Shark FlexStyle's two directional auto-wrap curlers let you style both sides of the head.
Can I use a straightener on wet hair?
Yes, with a tool that has a wet mode. The Shark SilkiPro has Wet and Dry modes with Rapid-Dry airflow and HeatSense ceramic temperature control, and three interchangeable combs for different lengths. The Shark Glossi also has Wet and Dry modes, with Low, Medium, High and Dry settings for smoothing and glossing.
Does an ionic hair dryer reduce frizz?
It is designed to: the negative ions help manage static and flyaways as the hair dries. The Dreame Dazzle releases up to 300 million negative ions. The Remington Shine Therapy D5216's ion generator emits 90% more ions, which Remington says gives a frizz-free shine.
Which dryers and stylers come with a diffuser?
Several do, for defining curls as they dry. Among the air stylers, the Shark FlexStyle has a curl-defining diffuser and the Shark Glam 5-in-1 includes one in its five attachments. The Remington D5216 and PROluxe AC9140 dryers come with a concentrator and a diffuser, and the D1500 travel dryer with a compact diffuser.
Can I use an electric shaver in the shower?
Yes, if it is a wet and dry model. The Remington PR1855 shaves dry, with gel or in the shower, and the Philips Shaver Series 5000 works wet or dry. Both have a pop-up trimmer for sideburns and edges, and the PR1855 also comes with a stubble attachment.
How long do the Remington PR1855 and PG6020 take to charge?
The PR1855 shaver charges in 4 hours and then runs for up to 60 minutes. The PG6020 grooming kit takes 14 to 16 hours to charge and runs for up to 65 minutes. The ColourCut HC5035 clipper is corded, so it has no battery to charge.
