How to choose a Mother's Day gift
From the product descriptions and our guides.
An air styler is worth it for someone who styles most mornings
If she dries her hair and then reaches for a brush or tongs, one handle can do both. The Shark FlexStyle gift set twists from dryer to styler and has a 2.44 m cord. The Glam 4-in-1 pairs Coanda curlers with Silki and Glossi tools for straightening and smoothing. The Dreame AirStyle Pro uses magnetic attachments and a cold shot to set curls.
Capsules keep coffee simple, beans and a steam wand give more control
The Vertuo Pop brews five sizes, from espresso to a mug and cold brew, and ejects the capsule itself. At 15cm wide, the Dedica Duo fits a narrow counter; it uses ground coffee or ESE pods, and a cold brew takes it under five minutes. The La Specialista Arte suits someone who enjoys the process, with eight grind settings and brewing temperatures of 92 °C, 94 °C and 96 °C.
Screen size and orientation decide the photo frame
Portrait photos need a frame that turns or pairs them. The Aura Carver has a 10.1″ landscape screen at 1280 × 800 and shows two portrait photos side by side. The Aspen's 12″ screen and the Walden's 15″ 4:3 screen work in portrait or landscape, and the Walden rotates automatically. The myFirst Frame Live 10 has a 10.1″ touchscreen that also rotates each photo to fit, with several slideshow modes.
Her phone and her health goals narrow down the smartwatch
The Garmin vivoactive 5 pairs with iPhone and Android, and the Withings watches need iOS 16+ or Android 9+. The Galaxy Watch9's Running Coach needs a compatible Android phone. For health tracking, the ScanWatch 2 adds an ECG app and round-the-clock skin temperature, which the lighter ScanWatch Light leaves out. Our head-to-head guide explains when a fitness tracker is enough.
Good to know
When is Mother's Day in Ireland in 2027?
Sunday 7 March 2027. Ireland and the UK mark Mother's Day three weeks before Easter Sunday, which is 28 March in 2027, so the date moves with Easter. In 2028 it falls on Sunday 26 March, and in 2029 on Sunday 11 March.
How do photos get onto a digital photo frame?
Over Wi-Fi, from a phone app. The Aura frames run on the free Aura app, which lets relatives add pictures to the Carver and Walden from wherever they live. The myFirst Frame Live 10 has its own app and 16GB of storage built in.
Do smartwatches give advice on sleep?
Some do. The Samsung Galaxy Watch9 gives Sleep Coaching, and the Garmin vivoactive 5 a sleep score with advice on how much sleep you need. The Withings ScanWatch Light and Fitbit Versa 4 track sleep stages, and the Versa 4's Daily Readiness Score uses activity, sleep and heart rate variability to suggest a hard workout or a recovery day.
Which kettle lets you choose the water temperature?
The Ninja KT200UK. Its six presets run from 60°C to 100°C, the lower ones for delicate teas such as green, white and oolong, and you can also set it yourself in 5°C steps from 40°C. A single cup boils in under 50 seconds.
Which air styler makes it easier to curl the back of your hair?
One with Coanda curlers, such as the Shark Glam 4-in-1 or FlexStyle. They wrap hair using airflow rather than a hot barrel, which, its description says, makes the back of your own head considerably easier on the Glam 4-in-1. The FlexStyle's two curlers wrap in opposite directions, so you can style both sides.
