How to choose vacuums, carpet cleaners and floor cleaners

Start with the cordless vacuum, because it covers the most rooms
Time a full clean of your home, then pick a runtime with a margin. A cordless stick trades a limited run time and a smaller bin for being light and easy on stairs. For upstairs and down in one go, a second battery helps: the Bosch Unlimited 6 takes interchangeable Power for ALL batteries. The Shark PowerPro Pet, Dyson V12 and Miele Duoflex HX1 convert to handhelds for stairs and upholstery.
A spot cleaner suits most stains; a deep cleaner suits whole carpets
A spot cleaner sprays solution into one patch and pulls it back out, which suits a stair tread, a sofa cushion or a pet accident. Treat stains promptly, blotting rather than rubbing. The Shark StainStriker Pet has a long cord and four attachments; the Shark StainForce works without a cord. A deep cleaner covers a full room: the Kärcher SE 4 Select cleans a 227 mm strip per pass on a 6 m cable. The Shark CarpetXpert is not suitable for wool.

Steam suits sealed floors, and wet-dry cleaners suit busy kitchens
Steam loosens grime on sealed floors, and the Shark Steam Mop does it with water alone, a manual pump and machine-washable pads. Where cereal, mud and spilt drinks end up together, a wet-dry cleaner saves a step. The Shark SteamPickUp keeps wet and dry debris apart, the Shark HydroVac has a Freshen mode for area rugs and door mats, and the Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene lies flat to 113 mm to reach under low furniture.
Let a robot do the windows and a pressure washer do the patio
A window robot holds to the glass by suction and follows a planned route. The WINBOT mini 2 grips with 8,000 Pa, hangs on a 3.3 m safety rope, and its 50 ml tank covers about 30 m² per fill. Outside, the Kärcher K4 comes with a Vario Power lance and a Dirt Blaster lance, and Kärcher's Home & Garden app gives tips for each cleaning job.

Can I use a steam mop on wooden floors?
Check the floor maker's advice first, and take care with unsealed wood. Our steam mop guide says sealed hard floors such as tile, sealed laminate and stone suit steam, and that moisture can damage unsealed wood and some laminates. The Shark SteamPickUp is made for sealed hard floors.
Which cleaner suits stairs and sofas?
A spot cleaner, which is light enough to carry from step to step. The Shark StainStriker Pet has a wide Large Tough Stain Tool for stairs, sofas and mattresses, and a Pet Stain Trapping Tool that keeps hair and dirty liquid in a separate compartment. The cordless Shark StainForce keeps clean and dirty water in separate tanks.
How long does a cordless vacuum run on one charge?
From 40 to 120 minutes, depending on the model. The Shark PowerPro Pet and Dyson V12 Detect Slim run for up to 60 minutes, the Miele Duoflex HX1 for up to 55 and the Shark PowerLite for up to 40. The Shark Stratos reaches 120 because it comes with two batteries.
How soon can I walk on a floor after cleaning it?
With a wet-dry cleaner, almost straight away. The Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene leaves less than 1 g of water per metre, so floors dry within 60 seconds, and Shark says floors and rugs cleaned with the HydroVac can be walked on almost immediately.
Will a window robot fall off the glass?
It is designed not to. The WINBOT mini 2 has four-stage fall protection, an edge sensor that reacts in 0.02 seconds, a safety rope, and a battery that holds it on the glass for 30 minutes if the power fails.
