How to choose security cameras and a video doorbell

Match the power source to where the camera goes
Start with whether there is a socket near the spot. The eufyCam C37, Tapo C410 and Tapo TC80 come with a solar panel, so they can be mounted where there is no power, and the cameras in the eufy SoloCam E42 and eufyCam S4 kits charge with SolarPlus 2.0. The eufy Floodlight E30 is hardwired to mains power for 24/7 operation, and the Tapo C320WS has an Ethernet port for the end of the garden, where Wi-Fi can be weak.
Check the resolution and frame rate
Resolution sets how much detail a clip holds. The eufyCam C37, Tapo C410 and Tapo C510W record at 2304 x 1296, the Tapo C320WS at 2560 x 1440, and the eufy SoloCam E42 and eufyCam S4 kits in 4K, while the Tapo TC80 and C200 record Full HD. Frame rate matters for movement: the C510W records at 30fps, which keeps fast movement from blurring, and the C410 at 15fps.
Choose where the recordings are stored
The Tapo C200 and eufy Floodlight E30 record to a microSD card of up to 128 GB, and the Tapo C410, TC80, C320WS, C220 and C225 to one of up to 512 GB. The C200's description puts 128 GB at about 384 hours (16 days) of footage, under lab conditions. The eufy kits add a HomeBase that stores both cameras' recordings at home, and the HomeBase Mini in the eufyCam C35 kit takes microSD up to 1TB.
Keep to one app where you can
Our smart home starter guide suggests sticking mostly to one ecosystem, because it makes voice control and automations simpler. The eufyCam C37 and the eufy Video Doorbell C31 are both managed in the eufy Security app. The eufy Indoor Cam S350 works with Alexa and Google, and the Tapo C200 with the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The Tapo C210P2 comes as a pair of cameras, so a downstairs and an upstairs are covered from the same app.
Good to know
Can I talk to someone at the door from my phone?
Yes. Our buying guide lists two-way talk as something to expect as standard. The eufy Video Doorbell C31 handles live video calls, quick replies and voice messages, and the Tapo C200 and C110 cameras have a built-in microphone and speaker, so you can talk as well as watch.
Do I have to pay a monthly fee to keep recordings?
Not for local recording. The eufy Floodlight E30, Video Doorbell E340 and Indoor Cam S350 descriptions say local storage needs no monthly fee or mandatory subscription. Our buying guide notes that some systems need a monthly plan for cloud recording and smart alerts, while others record free to a memory card, so check the running cost first.
Do I need doorbell wiring for a video doorbell?
No. The Tapo D210 runs on a 6400mAh battery and the TD20 on a battery charged over USB, so neither needs a bell transformer or wiring. The eufy C31 takes a 6500mAh quick-release battery or hardwired power, and the eufy E340 a quick-release battery or your existing doorbell wiring.
Will the eufy Video Doorbell 2K work in cold, wet weather?
Yes. It is rated IP65 weatherproof and keeps working from -20°C to 50°C, according to its description. The battery is listed at up to 180 days from one charge, and extension wires for a hardwired connection come in the box if you decide to wire it in later.
Can I turn off an indoor camera when I am at home?
Yes. The Tapo C225 has a physical privacy button that shuts the lens when you are home, and the eufy Indoor Cam S350 has a privacy mode as well as a patrol mode. The S350 also recognises people, pets and crying sounds, and follows motion automatically.
